102nd Brigade celebrates 48th anniversary with Commander 1ID

CAMP SANG-AN, ZDS—Maj. Gen. Gene M. Ponio graces the 48th anniversary of the 102nd Infantry (Igsoon) Brigade Tuesday, October 26, at the Brigade headquarters in Sanito, Ipil, Zamboanga del Sur.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held in front of the Pedestal Mini-Monument to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by the brave men of Team Igsoon to attain peace in the province and the whole region of Zamboanga Peninsula.

“Ito’y isang paalala, isang inspirasyon na kailangan nating ipagpapatuloy at hindi sayangin ang kanilang ibinuwis na buhay para makamtan natin ang tunay na kapayapaan,” stressed Brig. Gen. Leonel M. Nicolas, the 102Bde commander.

The brigade conducted a series of activities to recognize the people behind all the accomplishments of the unit. The unit also visited the medical frontliners of the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Hospital, awarded deserving military personnel, and recognized the contribution of its partners and stakeholders in its effort to end the insurgency.

“Ang Zamboanga del Sur at Zamboanga Sibugay ay insurgency-free na at halos isang taon ng walang nangyayaring karahasan,” said Nicolas. “Ito ay dahil sa inyong tulong, sa pagpapatupad ng EO 70 na kung saan nakikita dito yung pagtutulung-tulong ng iba’t-ibang sector ng ating lipunan.”

Maj. Gen. Ponio, in his message, congratulated the 102Bde for all its accomplishments for 48 years. He also acknowledged the efforts and the support of the local government unit, other government agencies, and the civilian sectors. With the coming election, Ponio urged the soldiers to help the national government secure peace in the province.

In the past two years, among the accomplishments of the 102nd Infantry Brigade were the clearing of the three Guerilla Forces (GFs) of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC): GF KARA, GF FELICIANO “BRAVO”, and GF JOJI. The clearing of said GFs directly weakened the WMRPC leadership and the organization’s morale and welfare.
