CAMP SANG-AN, ZDS – Realizing that they are fighting for the wrong cause, two Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-MG) members surrender to Joint Task Group (JTG) Haribon at Kampo Ranao, Marawi City, Wednesday, September 1.
The two DI-MG members were identified as @Hodaifa and @Mosab, both from Piagapo, Lanao del Sur. The surrender of @Hodaifa and @Mosab is a result of the efforts of JTG HARIBON under Brig. Gen. Jose Maria R. Cuerpo II, and the LGU of Piagapo, LDS, led by the Vice Mayor Hon. Ali L. Sumandar.@Hodaifa, who joined the group sometime in February 2017, realized the deceptive intent of the DI-MG that is capitalizing on violent extremism as the true jihad. He was also involved in the attack of Marawi in 2017. @Hodaifa surrendered in May this year.
It was also revealed by @Mosab, 19, that he was forced to join the group in January 2021. He was involved in sowing atrocities in the province to include numerous firefights against the government forces that displaced families in the hinterlands of Madalum and Piagapo of Lanao del Sur; and Munai and Tangcal of Lanao del Norte.
The two surrenderees also handed over two M-16 rifles with ammunition.
Vice Mayor Sumandar urged the remaining DI-MG members to surrender. He also encouraged the residents to report to the nearest military unit or to the 103rd Infantry Brigade on the presence of the terrorist group in the area.
Brig. Gen. Jose Maria R. Cuerpo II, the 103rd Infantry Brigade commander, assured the surrenderees that their safety and well-being would be given utmost priority. He emphasized that each life saved from the violent influence of the terrorists is a worthy undertaking.
“The 103Bde and the LGU of Lanao del Sur will continue to encourage the terrorists to surrender and settle down with their families, dedicate their lives to peace and development, and become productive citizens of the province,” added Cuerpo.
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Gene M. Ponio, the 1ID commander, commended the efforts of the JTG HARIBON. He also expressed his admiration for the bravery of @Hodaifa and @Mosab, for leaving the group and abandoning the armed struggle.
He urged the LGU officials and the locals to work together to put an end to terrorism.“We should shun violence to solve our country’s problems. We should collaborate to address the root causes of conflict to achieve just and lasting peace,” said Ponio.
