Wounded soldier receives medal after Zambo Norte clash

CAMP SANG-AN, ZDS – Maj. Gen. Gene M. Ponio, the 1st Infantry Division Commander, pinned the Wounded Personnel Medal to Pfc. John Mark P. Grande of the 97th Infantry Battalion at the Kuta Major Cesar L Sang-an Station Hospital today.

Two soldiers of the 97IB were wounded after an encounter with more or less 12 communist terrorist group (CTG) members Wednesday, August 18, at Purok 4, Bagumbayan, Sergio Osmeña Sr., Zamboanga del Norte.

The Wounded Personnel Medal is awarded to personnel who were wounded in action against an enemy of the country or as a direct result of an act of the enemy and those who displayed bravery, professionalism, and heroism in the performance of their duty.

This was the same armed communist terrorist group that the 97IB and 42IB troops encountered last July 4, July 30, and the recent clash last August 10 where a CAA was wounded.

The other wounded personnel who suffered a gunshot wound in his left leg is at the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Hospital in Dipolog City, awaiting the result of his X-ray.

According to the 97IB Commander Lt. Col. Manaros Boransing, the battalion is now conducting pursuit operations against the CTG until they are completely dismantled.Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Ponio commended the bravery of Pfc. Grande and all the 97th and 42nd Infantry Battalion troops who willingly risked their lives to achieve peace and stability in the province of Zamboanga del Norte.
